Colin has been the ‘token Asian,’ the ‘ABC’, the
‘house husband,’ the ‘token Dad,’ and most recently the ‘part timer who
does the pickups.’
Life is tough when you move countries; tougher still
in role-reversals. Colin is a Singaporean who left for college in 1991.
He has a business undergraduate degree from the Cox School of Business
in Dallas, Texas majoring in Organizational Behavior with Honors.
Colin returned to Singapore after graduation because
of the golden rule – basically, “whoever holds the gold, rules.” Making
his parents happy but also embarking on an amazing dot-com roller
coaster ride, he lived a frenetic life. After drawing the ire of no less
than the Singapore government in one of his stints as VP in a shonky
E-commerce company, he moved to Perth, Western Australia. The exit
strategy was to return to continue Emmy’s further specialist training.
Emmy, wife, was seemingly a victim of some international politicking
between UK and Aussie medical training program.
To make a long story long, it really was a case of
‘any excuse will do’ to leave for a different place, if you get my
drift.
Starting life in Australia was an amazing adventure.
Tasked to expand a listed online insurance broker into South East Asia,
he jetted between Singapore and Hong Kong, but was eventually ingested
into Perth HQ with the Tech Wreck of 2000.
In another of life's amazing turns, Colin found out
that he was expecting his first son, quickly made redundant from
collapsing online insurance broker, and picked up two new hobbies -
fishing and cooking! This started him off on another amazing journey as
house husband; sometimes cook, sometimes driver, sometimes parent,
sometimes aspiring entrepreneur, but all the time responsible!
Colin and William also found happiness in a
Montessori playgroup environment, with La
Casa Dei Bambini Montessori Playgroup. Life however continues, and
Colin was still driving such projects as Martial
Arts Training and Conferences, Search
Engine Optimisation, and undergoing his Master's
of Business and Technology ... of which he graduated in 2005.
With second child Bethany, an imbalance between
work-life occurred. It was soon clear that the amount of work and stress
was not sustainable. Colin embarked on a simplification exercise. It was
basically to clear his schedule in order to regain a semblance of
control. Once done, it was then time to return to the fold, and stare
life down.
Colin invites you to join him while trying to keep
his head over water.
